What this webcam test checks
The test requests your camera through the browser's standard getUserMedia API — the same path Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams use in the browser. If your picture appears here, the whole capture chain works: sensor, cable, driver, operating-system permission, and browser permission.
- Live preview: confirms the camera delivers a picture right now, with motion in real time rather than a frozen frame.
- Negotiated settings: the resolution and frame rate the browser actually agreed with the camera — which can differ from the box's maximum spec.
- Measured presentation rate: a per-second count of frames the browser truly presents, where the browser supports per-frame video callbacks. Stutter shows up as dips; smooth feeds hold steady.
- Camera switching: compare every camera your system exposes — built-in, external USB, capture cards, virtual cameras.
- Local snapshots: grab a full-resolution still to judge sharpness, colour, and low-light noise. The file stays in this tab until you choose to download it.
How to read the results
A healthy setup shows a steady preview at the camera's rated resolution with the measured frame rate holding close to the reported figure. Resolution far below spec usually means the driver picked a fallback mode, the meeting-style defaults of the browser kicked in, or lighting forced the camera into a low-light setting. Frame rate that sags in dim scenes is normal behaviour, not a fault — brighten the room and watch it recover.
The measured count can never exceed your display's refresh rate, so on a 60 Hz screen even a 120 fps camera reads at most 60. That limit belongs to the measurement, not your hardware. For judging image quality, use the snapshot: it is captured unmirrored, exactly as other people see you. Checking audio too? Run the mic test next to complete the call setup.
Camera not working? Troubleshoot by platform
Windows 10 / 11
Settings → Privacy & security → Camera: turn on "Camera access" and "Let apps access your camera". In Device Manager, confirm the camera has no warning icon. Disable it there and re-enable to reset a wedged USB device.
macOS
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera: enable your browser, then quit and reopen it — macOS grants the permission only on relaunch. External displays with built-in webcams sometimes steal the default; pick the right camera in the selector above.
Android
When Chrome asks, choose Allow. If it never asks: Site settings → Camera, remove the block for this site. Check Android Settings → Apps → your browser → Permissions → Camera as well.
iPhone / iPad
Safari asks per site — tap Allow. If blocked earlier: Settings → Apps → Safari (or the site entry under Settings → Safari) and reset website permissions, then reload.
Chrome / Edge
Click the camera icon at the right end of the address bar (or the padlock/tune icon on the left) → Site settings → Camera → Allow, then reload. chrome://settings/content/camera lists the system default.
Firefox / Safari desktop
Firefox: click the permissions icon left of the address bar and clear the camera block, then retry. Safari: Safari menu → Settings for This Website → Camera → Allow.
Still no picture after permissions are correct? Try the same camera in another browser, then another app. If it fails everywhere, suspect the hardware, cable, or port; if it only fails in one browser, reset that browser's site permissions and reopen it.
Check your full setup before the call
Meeting problems rarely stop at the camera. Confirm your voice with the mic test, your speakers with the sound test, and the screen you will present from with the monitor test. All of them run locally in your browser, the same way this one does.
Webcam test questions
Click "Test my webcam", allow camera access when the browser asks, and look at the live preview. If you can see yourself moving in real time, the camera, its driver, and the browser permission chain all work. The panels under the video show the resolution and frame rate your browser negotiated, plus a frame rate counted from the frames actually presented.
Everything runs locally in your browser tab. The preview is rendered on your device straight from the camera stream; nothing is recorded to a server or sent anywhere. Nothing is written to storage unless you explicitly download a snapshot. The test asks for video only — your microphone is never activated.
First clean the lens — fingerprints are the most common cause. Then check focus: fixed-focus webcams need you roughly 30–100 cm away, and autofocus models need a moment to settle. On Windows, some drivers apply smoothing that looks like blur at low light. If the snapshot here is sharp but your video calls look soft, the meeting app is applying its own compression.
Frame rate depends on lighting before anything else: in dim rooms cameras drop to a lower mode to gather more light per frame. USB bandwidth, an active call app holding the camera in a low-power mode, and your display refresh rate also cap what this test can present. Bright, even lighting is the cheapest fix.
The default view is mirrored because that is how mirrors work and it feels natural for checking your hair or framing. It is not what other people see. Toggle "True view" for the unmirrored feed, and note every downloaded snapshot is always saved unmirrored — the true camera output.
Work top to bottom: physical privacy shutter or switch, OS-level camera permission (Windows privacy settings or macOS System Settings), browser site permission, then whether another app such as Zoom or Teams is holding the device. External USB cameras should appear in the camera selector here once permission is granted.
