How to run a thorough touch test
- Clean the screen — oil and moisture cause both missed and phantom touches.
- In the multi-touch visualizer, draw slow lines across the full screen with one finger and watch for the trail breaking (tracking dropouts).
- Add fingers one at a time until no new rings appear; note the max touch count.
- Leave the device untouched for thirty seconds and watch for ghost touches.
- Switch to the dead-zone grid, go fullscreen, and sweep every row and column until coverage stops rising.
- Repeat suspicious areas from different directions and with a different finger.
Interpreting the results
A dead band across the screen
Straight bands (often a few centimeters wide) match failed digitizer channels. If a band persists after a restart and appears in other apps, the panel or its flex cable needs service.
Broken trails while dragging
Intermittent tracking loss can be a failing digitizer, but also an overloaded device or an aggressive screen protector. Retest after removing the protector before booking a repair.
Ghost touches in one area
Localized phantom rings usually mean panel damage (even without visible cracks) or delamination pressure. If they only appear while charging, test another charger first.
Low max touch count
Confirm the device spec. Some browsers on desktops cap reported touches; retest in another browser before concluding the digitizer is limited.
Suspect the display itself rather than the touch layer? Run the dead pixel test and the monitor test to check the panel separately from the digitizer.
